Conceived in 1959, Punta Gorda Isles was the "brainstorm" of three army buddies from the east coast of Florida. While dining in a waterside restaurant, they marveled at the manmade waterways and the flow of boats going by. One of them knew of a huge mangrove preserve at the confluence of two rivers in Charlotte County that formed the second largest harbor in Florida at a tiny community called Punta Gorda
They flew over the "fat point," and after negotiating with the City, purchased a small parcel and commenced the largest, most ambitious dredge and fill operation of its time. The project was completed in late 1979 and totaled approximately 5400 home sites located on 53 miles of 100' wide, 10' deep waterways leading to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico.
What is unique, even by today's standards, are the quality of the infrastructure and the high level maintenance that is provided to PGI residents. The entire canal system is rimmed by concrete seawalls, the upkeep of which is the responsibility of the City, as is the dredging of the entrance channels into the waterway network. Each home site in Punta Gorda Isles has full municipal water and sewer services available. The PGI community is covered by a non-invasive set of deed restrictions enforced by the City. Due to the generous width, depth and maintenance of the waterways, Punta Gorda Isles is one of the very few boating communities that allow access for boats up to 60'.
Those of us who live in PGI feel privileged to be able to look out the back window, see our boats docked 25' away and know that we can cast off and be in the Gulf in a few minutes or hours.
